Hygiene or Soucham is the first Niyama
What is hygiene (śaucam)? How does it affect our lives? How many types of cleanliness are there? Why is internal cleanliness important?
Yoga comes from Bhārat, so it is important to understand the underpinnings of this complex and subtle life-system.
The conceptual underpinning of Yoga are cognitive. This means that one cannot intellectualise these concepts, but look at them cognitively and viscerally.
All this means that the ancient concepts of asmitā or self-worth, dharma or natural state, karma or action that creates debt, and other concepts that are applicable to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs, need to be rewired and understood as a life system, not as a religion or belief system, linked to a God, as propounded by other non-Indic major World religions.
What is hygiene (śaucam)? How does it affect our lives? How many types of cleanliness are there? Why is internal cleanliness important?
What is contentment (santoṣam)? How does it relate to niyama? How does contentment impact our health and lives? How can we get better at it?
What is introspection or svādhyāyam? Why is it an important part of niyama? How is it practiced? What are it’s elements?
How does introspection or svādhyāyam impact awareness? What is the advice of accomplised yogis? What are the elements of the practice?
What is austerity (tapas)? What is the relationship of austerity (tapas) with niyama? How should it be practiced? What are it’s elements?
What is Dedication (śraddhā)? Why is it an important aspect of niyama? What are it’s elements? How does one practice it?
What is charity? Why is it an important element of niyama? What are the types of charity? How should chariy be performed?
The theory of yama and niyama is useless if it cannot be put into daily use. So, how can we integrate yama and niyama into daily living?
What is change? What is its nature? How does it impact us? Why is it so hard to manage change? How can we improve our capability?
Transformation requires synchronisation of both, our behaviour with the environment and the way we process information to be at peace.
