Credits - https://www.shrikrishnajanmasthan.com Shri Krishna was born into the Royal family of the Yadavas at midnight of Wednesday, 18 July, 3228 BCE, 5254 years ago, on ashtami in the month of Shravana, under the Nakshatra – rohini to Vasudeva and Devaki. Shri Krishna’s brother was Balarama and his sister was Subhadra. Shri Krishna was born in a prison at Mathura and smuggled out across the Yamuna river to live with his foster parents Nandagopal and Yashoda in Gokula, 10 kms away, where he lived as a cowherd, naughty and full of pranks. After many adventures, he shifted to Vrindavan, and later to Nandigrama. At 10, Shri Krishna returned to Mathura to slay his maternal uncle Kamsa and liberate his parents. Then, he went to study under Guru Sandipani near Ujjain before returning to Mathura. At 28, he rescued his Yadava clan from the attacks of King Jarasandha, and built the city of Dwaraka. Shri Krishna married Rukmini, Jambavati and others. He died on mrgashira-shukla-ekadashi, 5127 years ago, at the age of 125 on 18th Feb 3102 BCE. Shri Krishna’s grandson Vajranabha built a temple at his birthplace, which Chandragupta ll expanded around 400AD. Rashtrakutas added more around 800 AD, but around 1017 AD, the barbarian Mohamad of Ghazni attacked and destroyed the temple. Though rebuilt, it was destroyed again by the barbarian Sikandar Lodhi, and finally by Aurangazeb, who in 1670 built the Shahi Eidgah mosque over the temple. Luckily, the prison where Shri Krishna was born was not taken and it is the garbhagraha of the beautiful Krishna Janmasthan Temple complex. The Bhagavata Bhavan which was built in 1965 houses shrines for Radha, Krishna, Balarama, Subhadra, Jagannatha, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. The walls are filled with paintings describing Shri Krishna’s life, and include verses from the Gita. Adjoining this complex is Keshavdeva Temple, and to the south-east is the holy tank Potra Kund. So, this Janmashtami, pray at Shri Krishna’s birth place, but also reflect on the suffering and sacrifices that people of this land have had to endure to preserve this ancient civilisation. From verse 59, Shri Krishna tells Arjuna, even if you refuse to fight, prakṛti will compel you to act. Despite your delusion, you are bound by karma which drives your own nature. You are helpless and cannot do as you wish. The Brahman is present in all creation and it is Brahman’s māyā which causes all beings to imagine that they are working to an agenda. So, seek refuge in the Brahman with all your faculties and you will obtain the eternal abode and supreme peace. With your cognition fixed on me, devoted to me, sacrifice to me and prostrate to me. Abandon all dharma to me and surrender; I will liberate you from all wretchedness. Do not share this with anyone who does not practice austerities, is not devoted or focussed, can be blamed in his actions, or is jealous. This supreme secret should be declared only to those who are devoted to me, and desire merger with me. Anyone who hears with integrity and without envy will be liberated and happy, getting the benefits of stain-free action. Shri Krishna then asked, have you heard this with a single pointed focus, Arjuna? Have all delusions arising from ignorance been destroyed? Arjuna replied, my delusions have been destroyed, and mindfulness regained. I am freed from doubts and firm. I will do as you say. Sanjaya finally closes Shrimad Bhagavad Gita saying, having heard this high-level dialogue between Vasudeva and Partha, this wonderful experience has caused my hair to stand on end. Through the grace of Vyaasa, I have heard this supreme secret on Yoga from the Lord of Yoga, Śrī Kṛṣṇa directly. O King, remembering this wonderful and virtuous dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna, I am convinced that wherever there is Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, and Partha the archer, there will always be prosperity, victory, happiness, stable conduct. Thus ends Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, which is an Upanishad that teaches how Brahma-vidya can be obtained through Yoga Shastra, through the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna. What is Shri Krishna's last advice to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita? Why is Bhagavad Gita a Yoga Shastra?
From verse 41 in chapter 18, Śrī Kṛṣṇa speaks on varna or separation of people according to their natural competence. He says that the duties of brahmāṇas, kṣtriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras are distributed according to their personality traits or svabhāva which is driven by guṇa. Brāhmanas are serene, subdued, restrained, clean, upright, with awareness of the Self, sentience of the environment or kṣetra, and desire merger with the Brahman. Kṣtriyas have a personality of valour, virility, firmness, skill and cleverness, not flying in battle, generosity, and behaviour of a ruler. Personality traits of vaiśyas can be found congruent to activities such as agriculture, animal husbandry and trade. Sūdras provide service and work. Importantly, one should work in conformance with one’s conditioning even though it may have fewer merits, rather than performing good work according to the conditioning of others. Action performed in conformance to one’s own personality traits, no matter how badly performed, incurs no negativity. Our innate nature is action. Even though action comes with its own challenges and defects, like smoke which covers the fire, one should not abandon it. Anyone whose logic is unattached at all times, has subdued the Self, and is devoid of desire, that person attains supreme renunciate state. Śrī Kṛṣṇa then says, learn from me this supreme knowledge of how to reach the highest state of perfection, and attain Brahman. How to do this? Purify the intellect and hold the Self firmly through self-control. Then, relinquish sound related subjects, and abandon duality such as like and dislike. Live in solitude, eat sparingly, keep speech, body and cognition yoked by meditation, while constantly taking refuge in dispassion or vairāgyam. Abandon feeling of being the doer, all forms of power, arrogance, passion, anger and greed. Then freed from non-possessiveness, a peaceful Brahman transformation will automatically occur. On realizing Brahman, the serene soul neither grieves nor has expectations. Treating all alike my devotee perceives Truth in the Self because “I” and “Truth” are the same, and thereafter there is merger. Find out more, in this video... Shri Krishna explains Varna or Separation of people by Capability l Why Dharma should be followed
From Verse 26 in Chapter 18, Shri Krishna continues his explanation on how guṇa impacts us. He says anyone free from attachment, without ahanakara, with firm enthusiasm and resolve, unaffected by success or failure is called sattvika. Those who are passionate, attached to the outcome, greedy, inclined towards violence, impure and full of duality are called rajasika. Lastly, those who maintain absurd positions, are vulgar, stubborn and arrogant, malicious, despondent and procrastinating, are called tamasika. Those who can discriminate action from renunciation, action which should be done from that which should be left alone, are fearlessness, with no baggage, are sāttvika. Anyone who is unable to discriminate between natural human state and chaos, correct and improper action are rājasika. Finally, one who is confused by what constitutes natural state, and views everything in perverse or contrary manner is tāmasika. He who controls the functioning of the cognition, life-force or prāṇa, and the senses, through practice of yoga is sattvika. Next, those whose natural states are driven by desire and material possessions are rajasika. When a person refuses to give up expectations, fear, grief, arrogance, and delusion, such a person is tamasika. Lastly, the three kinds of happiness are; that which is like poison at first but becomes nectar on reaching self-realization is sattvika. That happiness which arises from the senses and sense-objects, and is like nectar at first but ends up like poison is rajasika. Finally, that delusive pleasure which arises from excessive sleep, laziness and negligence is tamasika. How does Guna influence Behaviour? What different attitudes do people display in various Situations?
Shri Krishna explains the true meaning of ahiṃsa or non-injury. He says, anyone who sees the Self as the doer alone is ignorant owing to an untrained intellect. However, he who is free from intellectual machinations or buddhi, sentiment or bhāva of being the doer, such a person is not bound by his action even if he slays other people. What Shri Krishna says here is that the debt accruing from any action or karma comes from our attachment to it and its outcome. When we act in the spirit of sacrifice and renunciation, the debt arising from such an action does not stick to us, even if we physically or psychologically hurt someone. So, by this definition, ahiṃsa is not non-violence, but our attachment to its act and its outcome. After this, Shri Krishna delves deeper into the three-fold motivators that drive work or karma, namely wisdom or jñānam, cognition of wisdom or jñeyam, awareness of the Self or parijñātā. Then comes the threefold constituents of action, which are the organ, instrument, methodology and resources, called karaṇaṃ, followed by the act itself or karma, and the doer or kartṛ. Wisdom, action and doer are split according to the mix of attributes or guṇa. When one sees the indestructible one-ness of Brahman in all creation, that wisdom is called sattvikam. When one perceives distinct differences or variances in all creation, such wisdom is rajas. Finally, when one extrapolates a single event into a phenomenon, and gets attached without reason, does not decide based on evidence of reality, or is trivial and fickle, that person is tāmasika. Sattvika people always act indifferently, without longing or hatred, or desire for the fruits of their action. Rajasika people are driven by craving and passion, a feeling of being the doer, and put a lot of effort. Shri Krishna explains Ahimsa l What are the Motivators of Work or Karma l Guna Impact on Motivation
Arjuna asks Śrī Kṛṣṇa to explain sannyāsa and tyāga. Śrī Kṛṣṇa defines sannyāsa as any action that is not motivated by desire, and tyāga as any sentiment where a person abandons all outcome or fruit of action. Importantly, while actions that are driven by desire should be abandoned, actions performed as sacrifice or yajña, austerity or tapas, and charity or giving without expectation of return, should not be abandoned. These three actions or karma of sacrifice, austerity and charity are the purification rites of the wise. Even when these are performed, the person should abandon the fruit of the action to avoid all experiences of ahaṅkāra or feeling of having achieved something. Importantly, obligatory duty should not be abandoned. Abandonment which arises from ignorance is tāmasika. When action is abandoned on account of fear of bodily harm or pain, the fruit of renunciation is not achieved, and this is rājasika. However, when work is performed after abandoning fruits of such action, such abandonment is called sāttvika. Such a person does not loathe disagreeable action, nor gets attached to agreeable action or work. In fact, a sāttvika person is self-contained and wise, with no doubts as to why action is being performed. Though it is impossible to renounce action, when the fruits of one’s actions are renounced, this can be regarded as having renounced action itself. It is important to remember that any karma, whether disagreeable, agreeable, or mixed that is not renounced, will accrue on death. Importantly, all action, work or karma has five components; adhishtānaṃ or place, kṣetra or body, kartā or doer, kāraṇa or reason or causation, prathagvidham or various points of view, and devam or the governing deity of that act. Difference between Sannyasa and Tyaga l Why Sacrifice, Austerity and Charity must not be abandoned l
From Verses 17 in chapter 17, Śrī Kṛṣṇa starts detailing the impact of śraddha or dedication in the three austerity methods of tapas, which are austerity of the body, austerity of speech and austerity of cognition. When these three austerity methods are practiced with dedication, with no desire for the fruits of action, that is sāttvika. When hypocrisy is practiced in the austerity with the object of gaining praise, honour, or wealth, that is said to be rājasika, and this effort is unstable and transient. When the self is encased in delusion and austerity includes practice of torture, or is practiced for destroying another, that is declared to be tāmasika. Charity or dāna that is given without expectation of return, in a proper place, at the correct time, to a worthy person, is deemed to be sāttvika. When charity is given with the expectation of a return favour and reluctantly, that charity is considered rājasika. Any gift that is given without heeding place, time and given without respect, or even insultingly, that is called tāmasika. The phrase Om-tat-sat is the three-fold designation that encompasses the praṇava or OM, Brahman, which is also referred to as TAT or that, and SAT, which means satyam or truth. It encompasses the Ultimate Truth, focus and effort of value creation. As enjoined in the scriptures, the transcendental OM should be uttered every time by seekers of Brahman before acts of sacrifice or yajña, charity or dāna, and austerity or tapas. For those seeking liberation, Tat means sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Sat represents the eternal and all-pervading, positive and inclusive nature of the Truth, so in sacrifice, austerity, charity and steadfastness, sat refers to any action where the internal compass is aligned with the Truth. However, when action, sacrifice or austerity is performed without dedication or śraddha, the outcome is called asat and creates no value. Find out more, in this video... Shri Krishna explains Dedication, Sacrifice, Austerity, Charity and Guna? What is Om-Tat-Sat? #soul
At the beginning of Chapter 17, Arjuna asks, what about those who abandon operating procedures and simply perform sacrifices with dedication or śraddha? How do the conditions of sattva, rajas and tamas impact them? Śrī Kṛṣṇa replied, our behaviour or svabhāva is driven by guṇa, which is a mix of sāttvika, rājasika, and tāmasika. The degree of conformance and dedication of our behaviour to our natural state or svabhāva is śraddha, and this dedication defines who we become. Sāttvika people worship the deities, rājasika people worship demi-gods and demons. Tāmasika people worship ghosts and myriad nature spirits. Tāmasika do not follow proper procedures, practicing destructive austerity, have a feeling of doer-ship, hypocrisy, desire, attachment, and power. Of all, food is critical in the three paths of sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Food that promotes life, value, strength, health, happiness, amicability, are tasty, viscous, substantial and agreeable. These are foods that are dear to sāttvika people. Food that is bitter, sour, salty, pungent, dry, and burning are liked by rājasika, while those that are stale, tasteless, putrid, rotten, left-overs, and impure are liked by tāmasika. Those not longing for fruits of sacrifice that is performed as per process, and offered correctly, with their cognition steady is sāttvika. Those seeking fruits of any sacrifice by fraudulent means are rājasika. Any effort that does not follow process, where food is not shared, mantras are not chanted, no emoluments are made and there is no dedication, that sacrifice is called tāmasika. Moving on to austerity or tapas, those who worship the deities, twice-born, teachers, with awareness, purity, straight-forwardness, celibacy, and non-injury are considered to practice austerity of the body. When speech comes from self-study and causes no excitement, is truthful, pleasant, and beneficial, this is austerity or tapas of speech. Lastly, tapas or austerity of the cognition exists when there is serenity of cognition, good-heartedness, silence, self-control, and clean sentiment. Find out more, in this video... In Chapter 16, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says that there are two types of creations in the world. Divine and demonic. Fearlessness, internal purity, steadfast in the yoga of wisdom, charity, control of the senses, sacrifice and introspection, austerity and straightforwardness, non-injury, truth, tranquillity, absence of crookedness, compassion to all creation, non-covetedness, modesty, absence of fickleness, vigour, absence of hatred are the qualities of the divine born. Then he says - hypocrisy, arrogance, self-conceit and wrath, harshness and ignorance are the qualities of the demonic people. Demonical people do not cognize action or inaction, and purity, right conduct or truth is absent in them. They say that there is no Īśvara and the world was brought about by mutual union with desire. Holding this view, demonical people work with malicious ideas and fickle intent, with impure resolve, insatiable desires, hypocrisy and pride, to commit fierce deeds of destruction, as enemies of the world. They regard gratification of desire as the highest goal and have immeasurable cares, which end only in death. They strive for materiality by unjust hoarding of material. Their attitude is, today I have gained this, fulfilled this desire, this wealth shall be mine, I will always win, no matter the cost. I am Īśvara, the enjoyer; I am perfect, powerful, and happy. They get bewildered by options, are caught in the web of delusions, and beset by foul torment. They perform sacrifices out of hypocrisy without understanding the concepts. With thoughts of being the doer, and addiction to power, they are constantly judging and envious of others. Those who hate and are cruel, I throw them in the vicious wombs of demons where, deluded birth after birth, they fall into the lower states. Importantly, the three gates of hell which destroy the Self are desire, anger, and greed, and these three qualities should be abandoned. However, those who understand and practice śāstras and vidhi or procedures, they go to the supreme goal. Concluding, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says; perform all your actions after understanding dharma. Shri Krishna classifies Divine and Demonic people l What are their Qualities? How can we overcome?
Śrī Kṛṣṇa says that the Brahman, which has no form, no end, foundation or origin, and cannot be perceived by the senses, can be attained by yogis of steady consciousness wielding the strong axe of non-attachment. Such a yogi would be free from pride and delusion, victorious over attachment, dwelling constantly in the Self, turning away from passion and opposites such as right and wrong, free from pain and pleasure, with clear focus on the eternal goal. Once yogis transcend materiality, they do not return. Śrī Kṛṣṇa says – this human form is that part of my Universal form that has been engaged with prakṛti to produce the cognitive and sensory apparatus. No matter which body the primordial Īswara enters or leaves, he takes this subtle element that makes us who we are, like the wind takes the scent away from the source, and transfers it to the next body. Our reality is based on the stimuli that we receive through the senses, which are processed by our cognitive apparatus and intellect, and our sense of stability or dharma. This reality disappears when we die. Yogis realise this impermanence and seek the underlying subtle aspect which drives all existence. Śrī Kṛṣṇa then says that he is the vitality that sustains the reality we experience, such as our body heat or sense of taste. He is both, the existence and the absence of memory, as well as wisdom. There are two puruṣas, the imperishable and perishable. All beings are perishable and the imperishable is called kūṭastha, which is the supreme puruṣa, or supreme Soul, the indestructible, or Īśvara who pervades and sustains the three worlds. Śrī Kṛṣṇa then says, I transcend the perishable, am above the imperishable and I am the highest, therefore in the world and the Vedas I am declared as Puruṣottama or Supreme person or Supreme puruṣa. He who is undeluded and knows me to be the Supreme Soul, he is completely wise and worships me with every sentiment. Find out more, in this video...
