From Verses 17 in chapter 17, Śrī Kṛṣṇa starts detailing the impact of śraddha or dedication in the three austerity methods of tapas, which are austerity of the body, austerity of speech and austerity of cognition. When these three austerity methods are practiced with dedication, with no desire for the fruits of action, that is sāttvika. When hypocrisy is practiced in the austerity with the object of gaining praise, honour, or wealth, that is said to be rājasika, and this effort is unstable and transient. When the self is encased in delusion and austerity includes practice of torture, or is practiced for destroying another, that is declared to be tāmasika. Charity or dāna that is given without expectation of return, in a proper place, at the correct time, to a worthy person, is deemed to be sāttvika. When charity is given with the expectation of a return favour and reluctantly, that charity is considered rājasika. Any gift that is given without heeding place, time and given without respect, or even insultingly, that is called tāmasika. The phrase Om-tat-sat is the three-fold designation that encompasses the praṇava or OM, Brahman, which is also referred to as TAT or that, and SAT, which means satyam or truth. It encompasses the Ultimate Truth, focus and effort of value creation. As enjoined in the scriptures, the transcendental OM should be uttered every time by seekers of Brahman before acts of sacrifice or yajña, charity or dāna, and austerity or tapas. For those seeking liberation, Tat means sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Sat represents the eternal and all-pervading, positive and inclusive nature of the Truth, so in sacrifice, austerity, charity and steadfastness, sat refers to any action where the internal compass is aligned with the Truth. Shri Krishna explains Dedication, Sacrifice, Austerity, Charity and Guna? What is Om-Tat-Sat? #soul
At the beginning of Chapter 17, Arjuna asks, what about those who abandon operating procedures and simply perform sacrifices with dedication or śraddha? How do the conditions of sattva, rajas and tamas impact them? Śrī Kṛṣṇa replied, our behaviour or svabhāva is driven by guṇa, which is a mix of sāttvika, rājasika, and tāmasika. The degree of conformance and dedication of our behaviour to our natural state or svabhāva is śraddha, and this dedication defines who we become. Sāttvika people worship the deities, rājasika people worship demi-gods and demons. Tāmasika people worship ghosts and myriad nature spirits. Tāmasika do not follow proper procedures, practicing destructive austerity, have a feeling of doer-ship, hypocrisy, desire, attachment, and power. Of all, food is critical in the three paths of sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Food that promotes life, value, strength, health, happiness, amicability, are tasty, viscous, substantial and agreeable. These are foods that are dear to sāttvika people. Food that is bitter, sour, salty, pungent, dry, and burning are liked by rājasika, while those that are stale, tasteless, putrid, rotten, left-overs, and impure are liked by tāmasika. Those not longing for fruits of sacrifice that is performed as per process, and offered correctly, with their cognition steady is sāttvika. Those seeking fruits of any sacrifice by fraudulent means are rājasika. Any effort that does not follow process, where food is not shared, mantras are not chanted, no emoluments are made and there is no dedication, that sacrifice is called tāmasika. Moving on to austerity or tapas, those who worship the deities, twice-born, teachers, with awareness, purity, straight-forwardness, celibacy, and non-injury are considered to practice austerity of the body. When speech comes from self-study and causes no excitement, is truthful, pleasant, and beneficial, this is austerity or tapas of speech. Shri Krishna explain dedication & it's relationship to Guna and Food? What are the 3 types of tapas?
In Chapter 16, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says that there are two types of creations in the world. Divine and demonic. Fearlessness, internal purity, steadfast in the yoga of wisdom, charity, control of the senses, sacrifice and introspection, austerity and straightforwardness, non-injury, truth, tranquillity, absence of crookedness, compassion to all creation, non-covetedness, modesty, absence of fickleness, vigour, absence of hatred are the qualities of the divine born. Then he says - hypocrisy, arrogance, self-conceit and wrath, harshness and ignorance are the qualities of the demonic people. Demonical people do not cognize action or inaction, and purity, right conduct or truth is absent in them. They say that there is no Īśvara and the world was brought about by mutual union with desire. Holding this view, demonical people work with malicious ideas and fickle intent, with impure resolve, insatiable desires, hypocrisy and pride, to commit fierce deeds of destruction, as enemies of the world. They regard gratification of desire as the highest goal and have immeasurable cares, which end only in death. They strive for materiality by unjust hoarding of material. Their attitude is, today I have gained this, fulfilled this desire, this wealth shall be mine, I will always win, no matter the cost. I am Īśvara, the enjoyer; I am perfect, powerful, and happy. They get bewildered by options, are caught in the web of delusions, and beset by foul torment. They perform sacrifices out of hypocrisy without understanding the concepts. With thoughts of being the doer, and addiction to power, they are constantly judging and envious of others. Those who hate and are cruel, I throw them in the vicious wombs of demons where, deluded birth after birth, they fall into the lower states. Importantly, the three gates of hell which destroy the Self are desire, anger, and greed, and these three qualities should be abandoned. However, those who understand and practice śāstras and vidhi or procedures, they go to the supreme goal. Concluding, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says; perform all your actions after understanding dharma. Shri Krishna classifies Divine and Demonic people l What are their Qualities? How can we overcome?
Śrī Kṛṣṇa says that the Brahman, which has no form, no end, foundation or origin, and cannot be perceived by the senses, can be attained by yogis of steady consciousness wielding the strong axe of non-attachment. Such a yogi would be free from pride and delusion, victorious over attachment, dwelling constantly in the Self, turning away from passion and opposites such as right and wrong, free from pain and pleasure, with clear focus on the eternal goal. Once yogis transcend materiality, they do not return. Śrī Kṛṣṇa says – this human form is that part of my Universal form that has been engaged with prakṛti to produce the cognitive and sensory apparatus. No matter which body the primordial Īswara enters or leaves, he takes this subtle element that makes us who we are, like the wind takes the scent away from the source, and transfers it to the next body. Our reality is based on the stimuli that we receive through the senses, which are processed by our cognitive apparatus and intellect, and our sense of stability or dharma. This reality disappears when we die. Yogis realise this impermanence and seek the underlying subtle aspect which drives all existence. Śrī Kṛṣṇa then says that he is the vitality that sustains the reality we experience, such as our body heat or sense of taste. He is both, the existence and the absence of memory, as well as wisdom. There are two puruṣas, the imperishable and perishable. All beings are perishable and the imperishable is called kūṭastha, which is the supreme puruṣa, or supreme Soul, the indestructible, or Īśvara who pervades and sustains the three worlds. Śrī Kṛṣṇa then says, I transcend the perishable, am above the imperishable and I am the highest, therefore in the world and the Vedas I am declared as Puruṣottama or Supreme person or Supreme puruṣa. Shri Krishna says that We are the Perishable part of the Imperishable Universal Person or Ishwara
Śrī Kṛṣṇa says sattva, rajas and tamas are continuously struggling for ascendancy. Detailing the quality of each guṇa, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says, when every sensory aperture in the body shines with light of wisdom, it is sattva. When greed, restlessness and longing predominate in any action, this is rajas. When there is no clarity, inertness, heedlessness, or delusion, it is tamas. When dying, if sattva is prominent, the Soul attains the highest world. In rajas, the person is reborn amongst those attached to action, and those in tamas are reborn in the womb of the deluded. Arjuna then asks, what are the indicators of one who has transcended these attributes? How can one go beyond them? Śrī Kṛṣṇa says, in nirguṇa state, he neither hates nor longs for light, activity or delusion. He does not dislike when anything is available or long for it when it is absent. He who is centred within sits indifferent and operates unmoved by attributes. Any person who has transcended attributes is secure in the Self, alike in pain and pleasure, and regards mud, stone, or gold alike. He is balanced in honour and dishonour, with friend and foe, without any desire to start anything. Śrī Kṛṣṇa says, when one practices yoga of dedication and serves me, he transcends the attributes and becomes fit to merge with the Brahman, the state of everlasting bliss. How does Sri Krishna explain the qualities of Guna or Attributes to Arjuna? How to transcend Guna?
In Chapter 14, Śrī Kṛṣṇa asserts that he created Brahma and enabled him to create the Universe, while providing the seed for creation. To understand what he means, we need to cycle back to Chapter 10, Vibhūti-Yoga, where, from verses 21 onwards, he describes himself as that quality that drives the natural state of all entities. This statement needs to be analysed in conjunction with his assertion of being primordial sacrifice or ādhiyajña in Chapter 8. The Universe is an immense karmic engine built on the evolution of attributes or guṇa into the five elements or panchabhūta. Our body is a microcosm of this Universe, and our experiences or anubhava are the micro experiences of the environment and our own internal change. Our consciousness drives our understanding of both, what we see and that we are unable to recognise or understand. Everything has a natural state, whether is our parents, friends, the earth, plants, animals, or minerals. For example, gold has a natural state which is different from silver, and this natural state driver is what Śrī Kṛṣṇa says he is. He says that he is the seed giving father, manipulating guṇa, which are driven by prakṛti, which is the natural state of any entity. Cognising this, enables us to cognise what activates, motivates and drives action which enables us to realise our own true nature. In us, he describes sattva as stainlessness, luminous, good health, bias towards happiness, and binding to wisdom; rajas to be the nature of passion, the source of attachment, which binds the embodied to action, and tamas to be born out of ignorance, the stronghold of confusion when dealing with situations, negligent, lazy, and somnolent. How does Shri Krishna explain his role in creation of the Universe and Natural State of Creation?
Śrī Kṛṣṇa explains that puruṣa and prakṛti are without beginning. Prakṛti drives guṇas, which we experience as change. The act, reason for the act and the actor are all caused by prakṛti. Puruṣa is the cause of experience of pleasure or pain. Importantly, puruṣa is embedded in prakṛti and experiences guṇa that emerge from prakṛti, and this interplay drives all action and outcomes in the Universe. Śrī Kṛṣṇa adds that the Soul is also an observer and a fragment of the primordial Soul, Maheshwara. When we are able to activate this observer, and become aware of the movement and interplay between puruṣa, prakṛti and guṇa, then we are able to transcend material reality. There are many paths to achieve this perfection. One can meditate on the nature of the Soul or find the same Soul in others. One can also achieve this through Yoga of logic or Sankhya, or Yoga of action or Karma Yoga. Yet others who have no personal path, but follow others blindly, can achieve perfection through sincerity and devotion. Importantly, we need to cognise that all static and dynamic elements of creation are the same and subordinate to the primordial Self. Sri Krishna says Purusha experiences Prakriti as Guna during Change l What is Ishwara, the Observer?
Arjuna starts Chapter 13 by asking Śrī Kṛṣṇa to explain Prakṛti, Puruṣa, the battlefield or kṣetra and the cognition of the battlefield or kṣetrajña. Śrī Kṛṣṇa replies that the body is the battlefield or kṣetra and its cognition is kṣetrajña. He adds, I know and cognise all fields and he who cognises my field, cognises me. Then, he explains what the field is like, what changes occur, in what circumstances, and what are its powers. He says, many seers or ṛṣis have described the Brahman in great detail and reasoning. It is said to be without value but also to have value, existing as well as supporting creation, and known to create as well as destroy. Even though it is undivided, it exists in creation as if it is divided, meaning that even though all creation is the same, we differentiate it because we do not cognise the sameness in field of action or kṣetrajña. Next, from the Brahman, the kṣetra emerges as primordial elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether, the feeling that I am the doer, intellect, unmanifested aspects that we cannot cognise, the ten senses and the five objects of the senses, which are sound, sight, smell, touch and taste. However, aspects such as desire, dislike, pain, pleasure stop us from evolving. However, humility, unpretentiousness, non-injury, tranquillity, uprightness, service to the guru, purity, steadiness, subduing the Self, as well as dispassion towards materiality, absence of doer-ship, disregard for sickness, birth or death, old age, infirmity, suffering, non-identity of the Self with loved ones, being consciousness and constant in any desirable or undesirable situation allow us to develop. He says, those with unswerving focused yoga of devotion to me, who resort to lonely places, avoid people, constantly seeking cognition of the primordial Self, who try to cognise the subtle underlying wisdom in materiality, they are those who shed ignorance and seek wisdom. This knowledge of the field or kṣetrajña should be cognized, because on cognizing it, one will attain immortality by merging with the supreme Brahman. Śrī Kṛṣṇa replies that those who worship the imperishable Brahman with complete sincerity and devotion, achieve him also. Then he adds, achieving Brahman directly is difficult and painful because Brahman is the cognitive state of null, but since he is material, relatable, and accessible, he is easier to achieve. He gives Arjuna the following options. Renounce all your actions to me, regard me as the supreme goal, meditate with calmness and in undistracted Yoga. Steady your cognition and place your intellect on me. You will then live in me because all your experiences will be me. However, if you are unable to control your cognition, then let the object of your actions, as well as action itself be for my sake, then you will attain perfection. You can also seek refuge in my Yoga by renouncing the fruit of your actions to me, and in this renunciation you will find peace and perfection. Importantly, do not reject any creation, be friendly, kind, and without the feeling of the Self, or of being the doer. Be constant in adversity and gain. He who is not agitated by the world and does not agitate the world, who is free from joy, impatience, fear, and agitation, he achieves me. He who neither rejoices nor rejects, neither grieves nor hankers, he who has renounced the auspicious and inauspicious, he who is completely devoted to me, he achieves perfection. He who treats friend and foe alike, and is the same when respected or insulted, in cold or heat, same in happiness or sadness, free from attachment, and modulated in praise or criticism, silent, content in all situations, homeless, steadfast in devotion to me, that human is dear to me and achieves perfection. When Śrī Kṛṣṇa speak about his higher states in Chapters 7, 8 and 9, Arjuna expresses his yearning to see Śrī Kṛṣṇa in his primordial form. Śrī Kṛṣṇa agrees, and to enable this, he gives Arjuna and Sanjaya divya-drṣti or divine vision to see this Universal form. What he sees makes Arjuna’s hair stand on end, and in a state of shock and wonder, he prostrates Śrī Kṛṣṇa, saying - I see various worlds, deities, ṛṣis, divine serpents and even Brahma in you. You have no beginning, middle or end; you fill the many quarters of the Earth and Heavens with infinite arms and virility. You are decorated with a diadem, club and discus. You are shining with the radiance and energy of a thousand Suns, heating the Universe. You are imperishable, dharma and the primordial person. I also see your unique ferocious form, devouring everything, with the three worlds trembling in fear. In fact communities of divine beings, sages, ṛṣis and others enter you, while others look upon you in amazement. Your form is huge, with multiple mouths, inflamed eyes, arms and feet. You are fearsome and I see everyone here on the battlefield rushing into your mouth like the torrent of many rivers. I am unable to withstand this sight. Please go back you your gentle form. Śrī Kṛṣṇa replied, I am the mighty world destroying time. Even without you, all will die. So, stop worrying and fight. Arjuna responds with complete conviction that he had been deluded by Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s his lower state, and not understood his true nature. He begs him to forgive any transgressions or presumptions that he may have expressed. Smiling, Śrī Kṛṣṇa returns to his physical form, ending Chapter 11.
