Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur. When man realised that Śakti was the source of creation and anchor of dharma as a Mother, he made her a deity called Mātṝkā or sacred mother. One of the important Śakti kṣetras, called Maha-mātṝkā is in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, where she blesses her worshippers as Ambabai or Mahalakshmi. While the temple finds mention in multiple purāṇic and mahajanapatha literature, the current temple is traces its roots to the Chalukya empire, around 7th century CE. Ofcourse, over time, many kings have added to the temple. Today, the deity is a 3 foot vigrahā of black stone with four arms, holding a mḥāḷuñgā or citron fruit, kaumodaki or mace, khetaka or shield and a pāṇpātra or bowl. Interestingly, unlike other deities, who face East, Ambabai faces West and the rays of the setting Sun fall on her twice, in the period between Jan 31- Feb 2nd and second between November 9 & 11. Thai poosam Soorapadman was an asura who obtained a boon from Brahma that only the son of Śiva could kill him? However, at the time Śiva was in samādhi, mourning the loss of Daksayani, so there was little chance of a child being born to Śiva. Soon, Soorapadman conquered the worlds and began oppressing everyone. The Devas, desperate, went to Viṣnu, who reminded Sakti that it was time for her to return to Earth as Parvathy, the daughter of Himavan. But, Śiva, the perfect yogi, was deep in samādhi and needed to be woken up. So, Parvathi, after strenuous austerities, prepared a prasādam, on Thiruvadarai day, which comes in January. As she was presenting her prasādam, Madana, the Deity of love, shot his arrow at Śiva. Disturbed, Śiva woke up angry, and burnt Madana. But the arrow had done the job and Śiva fell in love with Parvathy. They married and during their lāsya (dance), six hot embers emerged from Siva’s third eye. They fell into the sea of milk and emerged as six babies. Parvathy merged the babies in an embrace and they became Karthikeya or Kumara or Muruga, the General of the Deities. Muruga, armed with a spear given by his mother, fought and defeated Surapadman, Tarakasura and others at Thiruchendur on the Bay of Bengal. The Devas celebrated at Tiruparnakundram, where Indira, the King of the Deva’s married his daughter Devayani to Karthikeya. Hindus world over celebrate this victory of Dharma over Adharma on Thai poosam, which coincides with pushya nakshatra of magha month in February. Chandrika Devi Temple, Lucknow. Did you know that the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh was founded by Chandraketu, the son of Lakshmana? Did you know that, one day, when Chandraketu was passing through the forests along the Gomati, he worshipped the Mother and asked for protection? Mother Chandrika Devi appeared and comforted him, after which Chandraketu build a temple for her. Unfortunately, around 1200 CE, this temple was destroyed by invaders, but discovered and rebuilt around 250 years ago at a place now known as Mahi Sagar Theerth. Interestingly, Ghatotgacha’s son, Barbreek also worshipped mother Chandrika to acquire power. Lastly, it is believed that the head ornaments of Dakshayani fell here, making this a Temple an important Śakti kṣetra.
